Overwritten and over edited, it hurts to admit it. Too ethereal, the first pages of Bridge of Clay are so lyrical that the words float about, in wisps of clouds blowing around, but never leading anywhere or touching ground. It seems as if every hand-picked word was too perfect. I dived into Bridge of Clay, expecting love at first read, but I didn't enjoy the first page, or the first 38. Writing became even more stressful for the author with thousands of fans, who wrote begging Markus for new work, always sending their best wishes. Bridge of Clay is a complicated work that the author found difficult to finish the first page alone had 1000 rewrites. Thirteen years later, we have a book that is said by it's publisher to be "the most anticipated book of the decade." A book that made Markus despondent, a book he'd been trying to write for 20 years almost half his life.
